Ever wondered how scientists avoid calling every dolphin 'Flipper' or how they keep track of a whole family of them without them all wearing name tags Do dolphins even have a driver's license equivalent Probably not. But thankfully, scientists have some pretty clever tricks up their sleeves. This hour long workshop, happening on Saturday 26 July 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, will let secondary students get hands on with the serious business of dolphin identification. You will learn how scientists tell individual dolphins apart just by looking at their fins and how they estimate populations, all without needing to send out a mass email.
Your guide for this deep dive into dolphin data will be a local dolphin scientist, who practically speaks fluent dolphin. If you are a secondary student with a soft spot for science, marine biology, or just a general fascination with cetaceans (you might know them as whales and dolphins), this is definitely worth a look. It is also a handy introduction to the Cetacean Sisters program, which is designed for secondary school girls keen on exploring science through the world of whales and dolphins. The session is being held at the Mount Martha House Community Centre, 466 Esplanade, Mount Martha, and will set you back $16.
