Madeleine Cleary talks about the story behind her historical novel The Butterfly Women, which began when she realised some of her female ancestors lived and worked in brothels in colonial Melbourne. She brings Little Lon, the old red light district, to life with its crowded laneways, no-nonsense women and the kind of family secrets that make a genealogy spreadsheet look tame.

She will cover how she uncovered that hidden past, the choices involved in turning real lives into fiction, her research and writing habits, and the often bumpier-than-expected path to publication. The session is free to attend but bookings are essential, so bring your curiosity and a sense of humour.
